Working Title: King of the Road

Aim: To provide the listeners the history on Kenworth trucks and find out what makes them the leaders when it comes to building trucks.

Duration: 10 mins

Information:

·         Developments over the 38 years of being in Australia
·         Prior history before entering the Australian market in 1969
·         Basic info/specifications on the trucksKey Questions:
·         In what year did Kenworth come to Australia?
·         What makes Kenworth trucks better than any other?
·         With PACCAR Australia, it seems to be a parent corporation for companies such as DAF, All Rig and also Kenworth, could you tell me a little more about that?
·         How many other facturies or plants are their around Australia? Are they just as big as this one and the plant in Bayswater?
·         Approx. how many employees do you have on staff?
·         How long has Kenworth been a supporter of the Australian Road Train Association?

Far and Wide: Triple R

Far and Wide, a show that presents it’s listeners with the lastest music from the UK and Europe. It’s just unfortunate that the presenter, Steven Wide cannot present as well as the music is being played. Between songs I found him to be boring and lifeless. He would continue to talk in between at the same pace and at the same tone which would send you to sleep, if it wasn’t for the music played, i may have actually done that.

For a show that presents new music, Steven Wild would continuously talk non stop instead of providing the listeners with a taste of what they would like to hear. He either needs to work on his presenting techniques, grab himself a coffee to liven himself up, or the station would need to add another presenter to lift the program status up a notch.

Sylin provides you with the sounds of jazz from all over the world. I woudn’t say that the this type of program would be suited for an afternoon time slot, but should be pushed to an evening/night time slot. But having said that, it shouldn’t matter what time this program is, any fan of jazz would enjoy the show.

Ennio Styles prestents the show well. He doesn’t try to go overboard with silly antics and he certainly knows what he’s talking about. Occassionally he stumbles with his words and leaves long pauses before he talks again to coninue on with what he’s saying, and some of his technical attributes to the show could be improved eg. background music was too hight when talking and introducing his guests.

The show is very unique it the quality of sound it produces. I don’t believe i’ve heard many jazz programs that has the type of music that this show plays. It goes to show that any jazz program could be made to reach different types of audiences.

Nova 100: The Akmal Show with Cal Wilson

Despite being a Hamish and Andy drive time fan… i decided to give The Akmal Show a listen to. Overall i thought it wasn’t bad. I found that the pair worked well together, but occasionally interupted each other during segments. Since both Akmal and his co-host Cal Wilson are Comedians, they both provided a spark to the show when competing against Hamish and Andy on the Fox.

A few things that i found annoying during the show was when coming back from a song, they back announced the song and went into ads. For a drive time show, I don’t want to be listening to ads after someone has back announced a song. If I had to listen to ads, I’d rather have the ads in with the song not after the producer or host has back announced a song.

Akmal and Cal had discussion about “do you drive differently when someone is in the car with you?” Normaly you would expect the dicussion to go over two seperate segments in the show, but with this discussion, it went over 3 segments. I found it that it got a little long winded. They may of happend because something went wrong in the planning of the show or they just wanted to cover it over 3 segments.

SYN FM: Detention

This was to be the last show of “Detention” and not a moment too soon. The show only goes for an hour and through out that hour i found myself to be bored and disinterested. The host came up with ridiculous skits that seem to entertain the audience of 9 to 12 year olds. Through out the hour, they constantly produced a generic sound, just flat and lifeless. They read from a script the whole time and it just sounded awful. I found it hard to concerntrate while listening to these guys talk. Good thing it was their last show.

The Drive-Thru – Andrew Yule: PBS 106.7

The Drive-Thru, presented by Andrew Yule gives the audience a selection of 26 tracks with such genres as hip hop, rock, beats and alternative. I enjoyed listening to this program because it primary focus is on playing music with hardly any talking. The only time we get to hear the presenter is when he back announces songs after 3 tracks have been played. But when the announcer did back announce song… he would occasionaly take his time getting to the name of the songs, and at times i thought he was never going to same the name of the tracks. What i also found annoying was noticing the “umm’s” and “arrhs”. I’ve never really taken notice of this until now… he’s either nervous presenting speaking into the mic, but after being on radio for so long, he might just find it hard talking to himself for too long. This is where the program suits him more becuase the listeners get to hear three tracks with ad and id promo’s in between, where Andrew Yule would only have to speak at an average of 60-90 seconds.

Rocker 4: SYN FM 4-6

With your hosts Jimmy, Ray, Sam and Ange… these boys bring you a show different to any format heard before. The boys present the listener a show based around cheese. This is suppose to represent that the show is pretty ‘cheesy’. I would have to agree. I was confused at times trying to figure out what the hosts were talking about. At one point it sounded like they were going into a vox pop about a cheese company in Warnambool, but it turned out not to be the case when the backing music for the alured ‘vox pop’ faded out to the sound of the hosts talking nonsense until the intro of the song. This segment of the show last for a minute and a half.

For the first 30mins i couldn’t belive how much they talked about cheese, and making jokes about cheese. I was left wondering how could anyone listen to this and not feel disinterested. Even though their goal is to be a ‘cheesy’ radio program… I’m left to think, do they go overboard with the cheesyness.

The hosts appear to be friends from school. This was made aware when one of them made a reference to the days while they were at school. They would also make joke that would appear funny to them, but I’d doubt that anyone would understand the joke. Discussions were also taken place about serious issues, but were made boring due to the lack of preperation or lack of interest of talking about the topic.

The only good thing to come out of listening to this program was the song choices that were made. But the intro’s to the songs could be needing a little bit of work. I noticed that during the intro’s the name of the band was mentioned but the song was missed because the hosts would talk over each other and you would miss the name of the up-coming track. Occasionally someone would mention the name of the track just before the song comes on, but that was rare in itself.

Will and Lehmo: Triple M 4-6

Being Triple M’s answer to Fox FM’s Hamish and Andy, the guys still need to fine tune the broadcasting talent even though they have been on air for just over a week. The pair bring a mix of news and current events with a dash of comedy. In fact you could say a little too much comedy if that’s even possilbe. The guys just appear to laugh at anything that comes out of their mouths like they’ve been up for 48 hours straight where the smallest incignificant thing that crosses their mind would instantly be funny.

While listening to the show, I found myself to be very bored while listening. The boys would seem to drag on segments which seemed like an iternity and when talking about Richard Branson’s endevour to have Virgin flights to space, he went off topic to something completely different that occured in the studio. Will rambled on about this for just over a minute and when it came to tell the audience his punch line for the joke he was telling, the joke about ”virgin’s in space” didn’t seem funny, plus, the joke has been done before and seemed like a rip off from other comedians that continue to use Richard Branson as a instant punch line.

When the promos for this show were being aired on Triple M before their first show… I have to admit, I was a lil excited to hear that Will Anderson had scored his own radio program, because as a comedian, he’s brilliant… but, after seeing his full potential, its unfortunate to see him limit his ability on a drive time show. His Comedic work for should be left on stage not on radio. As for Lehmo, he should stick to work on “Before the Game” or go back to being a Chartered Accountant.

The Drift 2pm-4pm – RRR

I tuned into The Drift on 3RRR from half an hour into the show where the host Kim Jirik was interviewing members of a band called “Brandan Holland”… i belive that was the name. He didn’t really make that part clear, he just seemed rushed and unclear on who he was interviewing. During the interview, Jirik asked questions that should been asked before the interview. Just towards the end… it came to a point where you think the interview would come to an end as he began to thank his guests for coming in. But this wasn’t the case… he continued to ask questions to his guests before finishing 5 minutes later. This was a little confusing coming to the end of the show.

The second interview the host conducted ran a lot better than the previous interview. The interview was with band members Gareth Lilliard from ”The Drones” and Dimmi Dero who is supporting the band on saturday night. The interview started off with one of bands songs being played before the interview started. Jiriks interviewing technique improved, he seemed more relaxed and prepared unlike the previous interview. The mentioning of gigs coming up was defiately improved when he mentioned it at the start, before the break and at the end of the interview. Towards the end of the interview, there came a point where the interview was coming to an end… but this wasn’t the case, the host continued with the interview for another 5 minutes. This would be a little confusing to the egar listener.

Interviews: John Faine vs. Tony Martin.

I podcasted one of John Faines interview with Kerry Armstrong which occured last week on his show The Conversation Hour and found that he was well informed on Armstrongs lastest work, but this could be due to the fact that Kerry Armstrong is a regular guest presenter on his program. In this interview, he tends to interupt the interviewee from time to time with little “hmm” and “yep” while the interviewee is talking. Occasionally he would interupt her with other questions to ask. Most of the interview sounded like it was a conversation between friends which works because they can relate to each other since they’ve worked along side each other on previous occasions. The format of the show is pretty obvious to detect. The host would have an introductory discussion at the start of the show… go to a break, come back with the interview, go to another break, come back to a second guess… break… then finish off with another discussion.

Tony Martin with co-host Ed Kavalee, interviewed touring artist Weird Al Yankervic. This team interviews their guests like they were close friends getting together for a laugh. The pair obviously have notes regarding the interviewee because Tony Martin refers to it while the russle of notes of paper make its way through the mic. The interviewer’s would repeatedly interupt their guest through out the interview, but still the interviewee will respond well to their questions. Towards the end of the interview, the hosts would get callers to ring up and ask questions to the guest. This could say that the interviewer’s have run out of questions to ask.
